Description

For my Entertainment Education Communication course, I developed a short film project titled "নিষিদ্ধ কণ্ঠের প্রতিবেদন" (Report of the Forbidden Voice). The project explored the issue of child labor and media silence by highlighting the lives of children working in unsafe auto garages. Using qualitative field observation, investigative storytelling, scriptwriting, and video production, I created a visual narrative that contrasted the extensive media coverage of political events with the neglect of important social issues. The film emphasized the ethical responsibility of journalism, connected the story to several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and raised awareness about child rights, social inequality, and the need for responsible media reporting through creative visual communication.

Justification

This project explores the issue of child labor and the limited media attention given to important social problems in Bangladesh. I chose this topic because I believe journalism should highlight the voices of vulnerable people and promote social justice rather than focus only on popular events. Inspired by the realities of child workers in urban auto garages, the project examines how poverty, media censorship, and newsroom priorities can prevent these stories from being told. Through creative storytelling, the project aims to raise public awareness about child rights, media ethics, and social inequality while encouraging audiences to support responsible journalism and advocate for the protection and well-being of vulnerable children.

Outcomes and Learning

This project strengthened my research, scriptwriting, and visual storytelling skills by guiding me through the complete process of planning and producing a short film. It improved my ability to develop story concepts, prepare production plans, manage budgets and schedules, and connect media content with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this work, I gained a deeper understanding of media ethics, newsroom gatekeeping, child rights, and the role of journalism in addressing social issues. The project also enhanced my practical skills in storyboarding, directing, filming, acting, and video editing, while strengthening my critical thinking by connecting visual storytelling with real-world social challenges. Overall, this experience made me a more creative, responsible, and socially conscious media communicator, capable of producing meaningful stories that promote awareness, justice, and positive social change.
